A 'Bird Box' book sequel is coming in 2019

The Netflix adaptation of Josh Malerman’s 2014 novel was a smash hit back in December

The author of Bird Box has confirmed that a sequel to the original book will be published in October.

Josh Malerman’s 2014 post-apocalyptic novel was adapted by Netflix for a feature-length film which starred the likes of Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes and John Malkovich. The movie was a huge hit upon its arrival to the streaming service back in December, where it achieved the best first-week viewing figures of any Netflix Original film in history.

The huge attention which greeted the film version helped fuel Malerman’s desire to finish writing a sequel, with the author now confirming that the next book, titled Malorie, will be published on October 1.

“In the time between Bird Box coming out and the time since I’ve been writing Malorie, I’ve been asked a ton of times: people want to know what happened with Boy and Girl,” Malerman told Esquire this week. “But as much as I care about Boy and Girl, this isn’t their story. The Bird Box world is Malorie’s story, and I wanted to know more about her. I wanted to get to know her even better.

“At the end of the movie, I turned to my girl Allison and said, ‘I want to know what happens next!’ and she’s like, ‘Well, you know, you could make that happen,’ so it really was this warm feeling.”

Last week, Netflix confirmed that they had removed real-life stock footage of the 2013 Lac-Mégantic train disaster from Bird Box after its use in the film drew a barrage of complaints.
