Over half of UK gamers say they will buy a next gen console within three months of launch, as Cyberpunk 2077 is named most anticipated game.
A survey of over 3,000 ‘pop culture fans’ has revealed exactly how steep a mountain Microsoft has to climb with its next gen console, with 84% of those surveyed saying they were most excited about the PlayStation 5 and only 15% the Xbox Series X.
In terms of when they’d buy either next gen console, 37% of respondents said they’d do so at launch, 9% within a month of launch, 12% within three months, and 26% within six months.
The same people were asked which upcoming game they’re most anticipating, with CD Projekt’s Cyberpunk 2077 winning a massive 43% of the vote.
Top 5 most anticipated video games
- Cyberpunk 2077 (CD Projekt)
- Marvel’s Avengers (Square Enix)
- Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 (Activision)
- Dying Light 2 (Techland)
- Halo Infinite (Xbox Game Studios)
Cyberpunk 2077 dominated the game vote almost as much as Sony did the console, with second place Marvel’s Avengers only attracting 15%. (It’s unclear if the participants knew Dying Light 2 no longer has a release date or year.)
The same group were also asked about the current generation, with 59% saying their preferred platform was the PlayStation 4, 16% saying Xbox One, 14% saying PC, and only 8% opting for the Switch.
The survey was conducted by Experience12, via MCV, with data collected between 25 June and 2 July on the MCM Comic Con online channels (since there’s no actual physical event this year).
80% of participants were aged between 18 and 34, with 48% in the 25 to 34 age bracket, while 58% were male and 38% were female.
That’s obviously not a normal cross-section of the public, in terms of knowledge of games and interest in something like Marvel’s Avengers, but it’s still a reasonably large survey.
