Video game film adaptations get a bad rep.

Hollywood has an unfortunate pattern of not knowing how to translate material found in a revered IP into a motion picture. From countless Resident Evil sequels that were mediocre at best, to the abominable duology that was Mortal Kombat in the 1990s, it’s questionable as to why other video games have been glossed over in favour of these disasters.

As a very memorable Far Cry villain once paraphrased, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting things to change. In terms of successfully translating a good story from a video game to a good film, this sentiment has applied for the worse. This shouldn’t be the case. Not only are there plenty of games ripe for adapting, there is potential for them to be very successful.

Only look to the 2000s for a fantastic selection of celebrated, as well as underrated, video games that are ripe for the picking. By mirroring certain, successful film elements from other properties, they could experience mainstream success not unlike The Witcher Netflix series.

With fantastical settings and characters, along with some boundary-pushing direction and plot elements, we may one day find ourselves revisiting these distinct IPs through a film adaptation…
