5 memorable Arsenal v Man City matches: From Adebayor's celebration to 5-0 rout

Arsenal host Man City in the Premier League on Sunday in what could be another strong entry in a storied history between the pair in the top flight.

Down the years, the rivals have locked horns in the English championship on several occasions and have produced many eventful matches in the process.

With City seeing their title defence fall flat this year and Arsenal out of sorts under interim boss Freddie Ljungberg , both will hope to claim a much-needed victory at the Emirates on Saturday.

And to whet the appetite ahead of another potential blockbuster meeting, we’ve taken a look at some of the highlights from past encounters.

Adebayor’s celebration

Emmanuel Adebayor managed to wind up the Arsenal fans with his celebration in 2009

When you think of matches between Man City and Arsenal, there is one thing that often comes to mind – Emmanuel Adebayor enjoying his goal against the Gunners in September 2009.

Setting the scene, the Togo international had left the Londoners in the summer to join City and invoked the ire of Arsenal fans in the process.

After being subject to plenty of stick from away fans throughout the game, the striker gained a measure of revenge when scoring for the hosts in the 80th minute of a 4-2 success.

And in true Adebayor fashion, the forward celebrated in his own way – running the length of the pitch before knee-sliding in front of the away end.

That led to angry Arsenal fans launching objects in the attacker’s direction before he was ushered away by stewards.

Aguero’s hat-trick

Sergio Aguero has built a reputation for being one of the Premier League’s most lethal strikers and proved it with a hat-trick against Arsenal in February 2019.

The Argentine’s first arrived within in the opening 60 seconds, while his second came on the stroke of half-time to put City back in front after Laurent Koscielny had earlier equalised for the Gunners.

The former Atletico men then added a third after the interval for what was his 10th treble in the top flight, though he went on to score his 11th Premier League hat-trick later that season.

Back in December 2013, the Premier League rivals dished up an early Christmas cracker as City racked up a 6-3 win at the Etihad.

City held  2-1 lead at the break thanks to goals from that man Aguero and strike partner Alvaro Negredo.

The hosts added to their lead after the interval through a rare Fernandinho brace, David Silva and a Yaya Toure penalty in stoppage time.
