Spring is the perfect time to invest in a pair of designer trainers. Transeasonal weather = ultimate trainer season. And Gucci trainers are at the top of our fashion wishlist. It’s (hopefully) not too wet, too hot or too cold, and as we spend less time in our heels, a designer buy will give you a far better cost per wear result.
As fashion trainers have spread onto the catwalks of every designer – and therefore every high street store – you might be overwhelmed. Which style to go for? And which brand? We love classic white trainers, and Balenciaga trainers are a mega mood rn… but picking your trainer tribe is a very serious decision. We’re here to help! Right now, if you’re thinking of making a fashion purchase (rather than something to run in), Gucci’s eclectic range of trainers and sneakers are exactly what your post lockdown wardrobe needs.
Alessandro Michele, the brand’s Creative Director, often looks to the past for inspiration. The Seventies are a favourite decade for their retro appeal which translates perfectly into the lo-fi sneaker styles in Gucci’s trainer collection. Although because it’s Gucci, everything gets a fun and frivolous twist with sequins, florals, studs and rainbow panels.
The Ace is the most simple Gucci trainer shape while the 1977 Tennis range also has a pared back feel, although the colours and rainbow logo prints make them anything but basic.
Gucci has a history of quirky partnerships (last week Michele ‘hacked’ Balenciaga for a hybrid collection celebrating Gucci’s 100th anniversray) but the long term collaboration with Disney resulted in these super cute Donald Duck sneakers this season. Not all Gucci’s trainers are simple plimsolls though. You’ll find plenty of pumped up sports styles too, with the Rhyton, the G-Line and the Ultrapace all ticking off the trend (and all looking awesome with tracksuit bottoms or split-hem miniskirts.)
As well as the powerhouse Italian brands’s anniversary celebrations all eyes are on Gucci this year as filming continues on The House of Gucci, starring Lady Gaga. If you’re looking for real retro inspiration, it’s all there. But until it’s released, we’ll make do with the trainers, thanks.
