We have entered a bold new world for video games, with 2020 promising some of the industry’s most anticipated titles yet, from Cyberpunk 2077 through to The Last Of Us Part II. We also have a brand new console generation to get excited for, but we need to take stock and reflect on the year just past.
Because 2019 was a bit of an odd year.
The conversation had been mostly focused on fantastic indie outings from the likes of Control, Outer Wilds and Disco Elysium, and for great reason.
These games pushed the boundaries of what games can be, and have left an indelible mark on the video game landscape. On the flip-side, you’d be forgiven for forgetting about some more talked about games, despite them being 2019’s most anticipated releases.
Some of these forgotten titles may not necessarily be bad – some are actually incredibly fun – but whether through marketing missteps, a gross lack of content or just being sent out of the market to die, many of the year’s hottest properties arrived with little to no fanfare.
